Vybz Kartel has opened up about the mindset that helped him survive nearly 13 years behind bars. Rather than pointing to one secret, the dancehall icon says his strength came from a combination of faith, hope, discipline and creativity.

According to Kartel, building a stronger relationship with God, refusing to give up hope, keeping his mind active through reading, and continuing to write and record music gave him purpose during one of the toughest periods of his life. He has also spoken about the lasting emotional impact of prison and how the experience changed his outlook, encouraging young people to avoid crime and learn from his journey.

For Kartel, resilience wasn’t about pretending everything was easy—it was about finding purpose, staying mentally strong, and believing that better days were ahead.
