We spent a day in Harlesden, the neighborhood Windrush generation families turned into what was once called London's reggae capital, to find out how one wave of 1948 immigration still feeds, sounds, and shapes this city almost 80 years later. We start at Blue Mountain, a Caribbean grocery store stocked with ingredients you sometimes can't even find in Jamaica anymore. Next door, a record shop tracing the direct line from Jamaican sound systems to jungle, garage, and grime. Then we eat. Patties, fried chicken, escovitch fish, oxtail, curry goat, steamed butterfish, and a Trini roti stop that didn't go quite as planned.
