The $6 Billion Fashion Empire That VANISHED From America: FUBU
In the late 1990s, FUBU was everywhere — music videos, malls, jerseys — and the brand went on to generate more than $6 billion in retail sales. Today, that same logo is almost invisible in mainstream America. What really happened?
This documentary tells the true story of FUBU: how Daymond John, J. Alexander Martin, Keith Perrin, and Carlton Brown turned roughly $40 worth of homemade tie-top hats from a house in Hollis, Queens into a global fashion empire. We cover the $100,000 mortgage gamble, how LL Cool J slipping "For Us, By Us" into a Gap commercial gave FUBU free national exposure, the 1995 MAGIC trade show hotel room that produced around $300,000 in orders, and the Samsung America distribution deal that unlocked scale — leading to more than 5,000 stores, an NBA license, and over $350 million in annual sales at the 1998 peak.
Then the decline nobody understood: excess inventory and discount racks, counterfeits, competition from Rocawear, Sean John, and Phat Farm, a $5 million music album misstep, and the decision around 2003 to withdraw from U.S. retail and go international. FUBU didn't fail — it moved. The brand still belongs to its four founders and lives on through global licensing, collaborations with Puma and Urban Outfitters, and a 2024 return at Atlanta Fashion Week.
